Stuart Pearce has named his England captain for tonight’s game friendly against Holland and to everyone’s surprize he has chosen Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker.
Parker, 31, has impressed since moving to Tottenham in the summer and was named the England Player of the Year, in an award voted for by fans. Parker who has a mere 10 England caps is something of a surprise choice, though, as the returning Steven Gerrard has 89 England caps, a Champions League medal under his belt and has experience in International tournaments which Parker does not.
James Milner, Joe Hart and Gareth Barry were all in contention for the captains armband. Pearce said on Tuesday – “You want somebody who has the respect of the other players, someone who will put the group before themselves – a vital commodity for any captain.”
Yet Parker was sent off at the weekend against Arsenal, meaning that he will miss Spurs’ next game against Manchester United makes you wonder egh ?
